Trinidadian-American rapper Nicki Minaj has said her Nigerian pastor and her connection with Nigerian fans helped motivate her to speak publicly about reports of violence against Christians in Nigeria.

The singer made the remarks during an X Takeover event at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, where she called on celebrities and social media influencers to use their platforms to draw attention to the alleged persecution of Christians.

Minaj said her pastor’s Nigerian background had given her a personal connection to the country, while her large Nigerian fan base had strengthened her interest in events affecting its population.

“My pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him,” she said, adding that reports of violence against Christians had troubled her.

Her comments have brought renewed international attention to concerns about religiously motivated violence and the protection of vulnerable communities in Nigeria.

Singer calls for wider celebrity involvement

Minaj said she wanted more prominent figures to speak about the issue rather than remain silent because it was politically sensitive or unlikely to attract popular attention.

She argued that public figures could use their reach to encourage discussion and bring greater international awareness to violence affecting religious communities.

The rapper’s appeal reflects the growing role of celebrities and online influencers in debates involving human rights, religious freedom and international affairs.

However, advocacy by public figures can also shape how complex security situations are understood, making accurate reporting and careful distinctions between different forms of violence important.

Nigeria’s security crisis has multiple dimensions

Nigeria has experienced years of attacks by insurgent organisations, armed criminal groups and other violent actors.

In the North-East, Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have carried out attacks affecting civilians, security personnel and religious communities. Other parts of the country have experienced kidnappings, communal violence and attacks whose causes and perpetrators vary by location.

Claims of religious persecution and the circumstances surrounding individual attacks remain subjects of public debate. Assessing them requires evidence about specific incidents, the identities of victims and perpetrators, and the motives behind the violence.

Minaj’s remarks focused on concerns about Christians and their freedom to practise their faith safely.

Call for attention to religious freedom

The singer encouraged other celebrities and influencers to join the conversation, arguing that influential voices could help ensure that reports of violence receive wider attention.

Her intervention adds an international entertainment figure to a debate already involving religious leaders, government officials, human rights advocates and security analysts.

The broader challenge for Nigerian authorities remains protecting citizens regardless of religion, investigating attacks effectively and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

Minaj’s comments have amplified calls for attention to the issue, while the continuing security crisis requires sustained investigation, accurate reporting and effective protection for affected communities.
