ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers face disciplinary action over alleged extrajudicial killing captured in viral video
The Nigeria Police Force has presented Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman alongside other officers implicated in the killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Delta State.
The development follows widespread outrage after a viral video showed the victim restrained on the ground before being shot at close range in Effurun on April 26, 2026.
Police authorities had earlier confirmed that the incident constituted an “extra-judicial killing,” noting that the officer violated established rules of engagement and operational procedures.
According to the Delta State Police Command, ASP Usman, who led the operation, discharged his firearm unlawfully, leading to the victim’s death. The officer was subsequently arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.
Further actions taken by the police hierarchy include the dismissal of the officers involved and plans for criminal prosecution. Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described the act as “unprofessional and criminal,” stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated within the force.
The killing has sparked nationwide condemnation from civil society groups and members of the public, reigniting concerns over police brutality and accountability in Nigeria.
Authorities have assured that justice will be pursued, with the case expected to proceed through both internal disciplinary channels and the criminal justice system.
As investigations and legal proceedings continue, the case is likely to test the police force’s commitment to accountability and reform amid growing public scrutiny.
