Veteran actor says Nigerians must “take back power” as he joins growing list of celebrities entering politics

Popular Nollywood veteran, Emeka Ike, has officially stepped into Nigeria’s political arena after declaring his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The actor made the announcement in a trending video that has since sparked reactions across social media, with supporters and critics debating whether entertainers can truly change Nigeria’s political landscape. Emeka Ike revealed that he would be contesting to represent the Bwari/AMAC Federal Constituency in Abuja under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking passionately in the now-viral clip, the actor said his decision was inspired by frustration over the state of governance and the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. According to him, citizens can no longer afford to remain silent while politicians continue to dominate the system unchecked.

“I’m running for the Federal House of Representatives and we want to make a federal statement,” the actor declared, while urging Nigerians to obtain their PVCs and participate actively in elections.

The development has further intensified conversations about the growing influence of entertainers in Nigerian politics. Over the years, several celebrities have attempted to transition into governance, with mixed outcomes. Political analysts say Emeka Ike’s popularity and outspoken personality could give him an advantage, especially among young voters frustrated with traditional politicians.

His declaration comes at a time when new political movements and emerging parties are trying to reshape the country’s political structure ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 elections. Many Nigerians online described the move as “unexpected,” while others praised the actor for choosing action over criticism.
