Monarch Withdraws Traditional Title From Group Leader Following Controversial Performance
The Oba of Benin, His Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has indefinitely suspended the Isikhuan royal praise singers following an alleged breach of palace rules and Benin traditional customs.
The palace said the group had allegedly performed a traditional ceremony at the residence of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, during his 92nd birthday celebration without authorisation.
Palace Announces Suspension
The decision was conveyed during an emergency palace meeting in Benin City on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, palace authorities regarded the incident as a serious breach of Benin traditional protocol.
The performance was reportedly one traditionally reserved for the Oba.
Vanguard reported that the palace described the incident as a violation of an ancient Benin taboo.
Royal Title Withdrawn
The palace also withdrew the traditional title of Okao from Juliet Omogui, the leader of the Isikhuan royal praise singers.
Omogui was reportedly directed to return the traditional headgear, known as Okuku, pending further instructions from the Oba.
The palace said the decision followed her admission of the alleged incident, which was also supported by a video circulating on social media.
Why the Performance Became Controversial
The controversy centres on the significance of royal praise performances within Benin traditional culture.
Palace officials reportedly questioned why the Isikhuan group performed at Igbinedion’s residence without palace authorisation, particularly given the traditional restrictions surrounding the ceremony.
The palace chiefs also reportedly questioned why Chief Igbinedion permitted the performance despite his longstanding relationship with Benin traditions.
Palace Emphasises Respect for Tradition
The suspension highlights the importance attached to established customs within the Benin monarchy.
The palace said the decision was taken following an opportunity for those involved to explain their roles in the incident.
The suspension remains indefinite pending further directives from the Oba.
