Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has released documents showing what he said were the funds in Anambra State Government accounts when he handed over power in 2014.
The documents were released amid an ongoing dispute between Obi and the Anambra State Government over the state’s financial position and the debts inherited from previous administrations.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement, associated with Obi’s running mate Rabiu Kwankwaso, shared the documents on X, according to reports published on September 22, 2026.
The Financial Dispute
The development follows claims by the Anambra State Government that the state was still repaying debts inherited from previous administrations, including those associated with Obi and Willie Obiano.
Obi’s publication of financial records represents his response to the dispute. The documents should be examined alongside official state financial records, debt statements and independent assessments before conclusions are drawn about the state’s financial position.
Verification of Financial Records
A review of the documents would need to establish the nature of the balances, the dates of the records, the relevant accounts and whether the amounts represent cash balances, liabilities, commitments or other financial categories.
A government’s financial position cannot be established solely from a single account balance without considering its outstanding obligations and the applicable accounting framework.
The dispute remains a matter of public and political debate, with the respective claims requiring documentary verification.
