At least two people were killed and three others injured after suspected militants attacked a civilian guard post in Mangor, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 10 p.m. in Angwan Tsarki, a residential area within a farming settlement, while community volunteers were carrying out night-watch duties.

Reports said the attackers opened fire on the volunteers, killing two people and injuring three others.

The injured victims were reportedly taken to a hospital for treatment, while videos circulating online showed people receiving medical attention following the incident.

Community security volunteers targeted

The incident highlights the risks faced by local residents who participate in community-based security arrangements in areas affected by recurring violence.

Community volunteers frequently undertake night-watch duties where residents seek to supplement formal security operations.

However, their lack of military-grade equipment and protection can leave them vulnerable when confronted by heavily armed attackers.

Calls for security intervention

The latest incident is likely to renew calls for stronger security measures in vulnerable communities across Plateau State.

Authorities are expected to investigate the attack and establish the identities and motives of those responsible.

Given the history of communal violence in parts of Plateau, community leaders and security agencies will also face pressure to prevent retaliatory attacks following the incident.
