The Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, has cautioned political leaders against misleading Nigerians, urging them to prioritise security, economic welfare and the needs of ordinary citizens as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.

The monarch made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

During the meeting, the emir stressed that political competition should be driven by honest engagement, responsible leadership and efforts to improve the lives of citizens rather than hostility, dishonesty or attempts to undermine opponents.

He emphasised that political leaders seeking public support must demonstrate genuine concern for the people and address the challenges affecting their daily lives.

The monarch’s warning was particularly directed at the conduct of politicians as preparations gather momentum for the next presidential election.

He maintained that political activity should not become an excuse for abandoning moral values or disregarding the consequences of public statements and decisions.

According to the emir, politicians must be prepared to persuade Nigerians through their records, policies and practical contributions rather than rely on personal attacks or divisive rhetoric.

He also expressed concern about the economic and industrial challenges facing northern Nigeria, calling attention to the decline of once-prominent industries and the implications for employment, economic growth and livelihoods.

The emir urged political leaders and community elders to speak honestly about the problems confronting the region and hold public officeholders accountable, irrespective of political affiliations.

He further stressed that democratic governance should be measured by the extent to which leaders respond to the needs of citizens, particularly those facing insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship.

His remarks come as the APC intensifies consultations with traditional rulers and political stakeholders in preparation for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

Yari has been engaging traditional institutions and other influential figures as the ruling party seeks to strengthen its political support ahead of the election.

The emir’s intervention highlights the growing debate over the responsibilities of political leaders, the quality of campaign messaging and the need to place citizens’ welfare at the centre of electoral competition.
