After weeks of uncertainty that triggered protests, school closures and nationwide concern, the pupils and teachers abducted from communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom. The Presidency confirmed the development, crediting security agencies with securing the victims’ release, while details surrounding the operation are still emerging.

A wave of relief swept across Oyo State on Friday after the pupils and teachers kidnapped during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area were freed, bringing an end to weeks of anxiety for their families and communities.

The victims had spent more than 50 days in captivity after armed men attacked schools in Ahoro-Esiele, Yawota and nearby communities, an incident that reignited concerns over the safety of schools in Nigeria.

The release of the victims was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who announced that all the abducted pupils and teachers had been rescued through the efforts of Nigerian security agencies.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not disclosed the exact circumstances surrounding the victims’ freedom, including whether the release followed a rescue operation, negotiations or other security efforts. Officials also did not immediately provide information on the victims’ medical condition.
