Former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi is mourning the death of his mother, Mrs. Mary Amaechi, who passed away peacefully at the age of 89. The family described her as a devoted Christian, respected community leader and matriarch whose life was marked by faith, compassion and service.

A cloud of grief has descended on the family of former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, following the death of his mother, Mrs. Mary Amaechi.

The family announced on Thursday that the 89-year-old matriarch died peacefully, bringing to an end a life remembered for its unwavering commitment to family, faith and community service.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Rotimi Amaechi Media Office, which described the late Mrs. Amaechi as the pillar that held her family together through love, peace and unity.

According to the statement, she passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.

Beyond raising her family, Mrs. Amaechi was celebrated as a respected Christian leader and community figure.

The family noted that she remained steadfast in her Christian faith throughout her lifetime and was admired by neighbours and community members for her generosity, humility and willingness to support those in need.

Her legacy, they said, extends beyond her immediate family to the many lives she touched through kindness and service.

Rotimi Amaechi remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures, having served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State, Minister of Transportation and now the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate.

Political associates, religious leaders and supporters are expected to pay tribute to the late matriarch in the coming days as condolence messages continue to pour in.

The family said details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated to the public at a later date.

It also expressed gratitude to friends, supporters and well-wishers for the prayers and condolences already received during what it described as a difficult period of mourning.

The passing of Mrs. Mary Amaechi marks the loss of a woman remembered not only as the mother of one of Nigeria’s leading politicians but also as a respected community matriarch whose life reflected faith, resilience and devotion to others. As tributes continue to emerge, her family says her legacy of love and service will remain an enduring source of inspiration.
