An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Sola Ebiseni, has claimed that Northern Nigeria has effectively settled on supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that political calculations in the region are already shifting towards the 2031 contest.
Ebiseni made the assertion during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the political landscape ahead of the next general election.
According to him, political actors across the North’s geopolitical zones are looking beyond 2027, having, in his assessment, accepted that Tinubu would retain the presidency for another term.
“Every zone of the North is looking forward to 2031; they’ve conceded 2027 to Tinubu. The entire North has made up its mind for Tinubu,” Ebiseni said.
His remarks suggest that he believes Tinubu has a strong political position in the region and that some northern political actors are already considering how the next succession contest could unfold.
Ebiseni has previously declared support for Tinubu’s second-term bid after leaving the Labour Party, where he served as South-West coordinator of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign.
His latest comments add to the growing debate over the strength of the President’s political coalition and the likely performance of opposition candidates in the 2027 election.
Northern Nigeria remains a crucial battleground in presidential elections because of its large electorate and diverse political interests. The region comprises several states, ethnic communities, religious groups and competing political constituencies whose preferences cannot be reduced to a single declaration by an individual politician.
Consequently, Ebiseni’s claim should be understood as his political assessment rather than evidence that every northern state, political group or voter has committed to supporting Tinubu.
The actual distribution of support will become clearer through party mobilisation, campaign activity, voter engagement and, ultimately, election results.
With the 2027 election approaching, declarations of regional support are likely to remain a prominent feature of political messaging as the APC and opposition parties attempt to consolidate their respective bases.
