Former Zamfara State Governor and Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will defeat his potential challengers in the 2027 presidential election.

Yari made the declaration on Friday, October 9, after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he spoke to State House correspondents about the political outlook ahead of the next general election.

The senator, who represents Zamfara West, argued that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi would struggle to defeat the incumbent because, in his assessment, neither had a support base extending across the country as effectively as Tinubu’s.

Atiku is associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), according to the political alignments presented in the reports surrounding the 2027 contest.

Yari’s comments reflect the APC’s confidence in its national political machinery as the party prepares to seek another presidential mandate for Tinubu.

However, the assertion that the opposition candidates have no chance of winning remains a political assessment by an APC campaign official, not an established electoral outcome. The election is still ahead, and its result will depend on voter preferences, party organisation, candidate selection, campaign performance and the conduct of the electoral process.

The 2027 contest is expected to be shaped by public assessments of the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, security record, job creation efforts and ability to ease the cost of living.

The opposition, meanwhile, faces the challenge of building a coherent national campaign, strengthening party structures and presenting an alternative that can attract voters across Nigeria’s regions and demographic groups.

Nigeria’s electoral history has shown that political endorsements and campaign declarations do not necessarily determine voting outcomes. Candidates must convert party support into votes through mobilisation, credible platforms and the confidence of the electorate.

Yari’s remarks therefore signal the APC’s intention to project Tinubu as a candidate with a broad national coalition, while also seeking to frame the opposition as lacking comparable reach.

As political activity intensifies ahead of 2027, the strength of those competing claims will ultimately be tested at the ballot box.
