New initiative expected to ease aircraft acquisition challenges and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry competitiveness

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company, a strategic initiative aimed at improving access to aircraft for domestic airlines and strengthening the country’s aviation sector.

The approval was granted as part of broader aviation reforms designed to address long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian airlines, particularly the high cost and difficulty of acquiring aircraft for commercial operations.

According to officials, the new leasing company will provide a structured framework for airlines to access aircraft through more flexible financing arrangements, reducing dependence on foreign leasing firms and easing operational pressure on local carriers.

The initiative is also expected to support fleet expansion, improve route connectivity, and enhance competitiveness within Nigeria’s aviation market, which has often struggled with limited aircraft availability and high maintenance costs.

Government representatives noted that the establishment of the leasing company aligns with efforts to position Nigeria as a regional aviation hub, while also attracting investment into the sector.

Industry stakeholders have long argued that access to affordable aircraft leasing is a critical barrier to growth for domestic airlines, many of which operate with aging fleets or limited capacity due to financial constraints.

The new company is expected to work in collaboration with regulatory bodies and financial institutions to structure leasing models that are sustainable and tailored to the local operating environment.

With the approval of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company, attention now turns to implementation, as stakeholders anticipate reforms that could reshape the operational landscape of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
