Nigeria’s domestic airline operators have raised concerns over rising aviation fuel costs, warning that flight disruptions could occur if the situation is not addressed.

The warning comes amid sharp increases in Jet A1 fuel prices, which have placed significant pressure on airline operations across the country.

The Airline Operators of Nigeria had earlier signalled the possibility of suspending operations due to unsustainable costs.

Aviation fuel prices reportedly rose from under ₦1,000 per litre in previous months to over ₦3,000 in some markets, according to industry sources.

Airlines say the increase has made it difficult to maintain scheduled flights without incurring heavy losses.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has since intervened, engaging operators and regulators in emergency discussions aimed at preventing a shutdown.

Aviation authorities have urged airlines to maintain operations while negotiations continue.

Industry stakeholders argue that the crisis reflects broader challenges in Nigeria’s energy and foreign exchange sectors.

Airlines also cite high maintenance costs, forex scarcity, and airport charges as compounding pressures.

Passengers have expressed concern over possible disruptions, especially on major domestic routes.
