University lecturers accuse Federal Government of violating 2025 agreement
Fresh anxiety is spreading across Nigeria’s university system as the Academic Staff Union of Universities reportedly threatened another nationwide strike over alleged failure by the Federal Government to fully implement agreements reached in 2025.
The union accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of breaching key promises relating to lecturers’ welfare, university funding, earned allowances, and revitalization of public tertiary institutions.
Sources within the union disclosed that frustration has been mounting among lecturers following what they described as “delayed implementation” of negotiated terms. The development has reignited fears among students and parents who still remember the devastating impact of previous ASUU strikes on academic calendars nationwide.
Education stakeholders warn that another prolonged shutdown could worsen the already fragile state of Nigeria’s public universities, forcing more students toward private institutions and overseas alternatives.
Social media reactions have also been intense, with many Nigerians blaming successive governments for repeatedly failing to address long-standing issues in the education sector despite repeated negotiations with university unions.
