Former SGF Babachir Lawal resigned from the ADC after alleging that the party’s presidential primaries were manipulated in favour of Atiku Abubakar.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing concerns over the party’s recently concluded presidential primary election.
Lawal announced his departure after Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s presidential candidate. In a statement, he alleged that the primaries were “massively rigged” in favour of the former Vice President.
According to him, the outcome of the exercise reflected a process he no longer wished to be associated with. He further claimed that the results were predetermined and said he would not be part of what he described as a political arrangement designed to favour Atiku.
The resignation introduces another layer to the internal tensions that have followed the ADC primary process, particularly after other aspirants also raised objections to the outcome.
Lawal went further in his criticism of Atiku, describing him as incompetent and insisting that he should not come close to the presidential office. He also stated that President Bola Tinubu would be a better option than the former Vice President.
His exit marks a significant development within the opposition party at a time when political alignments ahead of the 2027 election continue to evolve.
