Egypt secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating Australia 4–2 on penalties following a hard-fought 1–1 draw after extra time, earning the country’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match.

Egypt made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after overcoming Australia in a tense penalty shootout to advance to the Round of 16. The Pharaohs held their nerve from the spot after neither side could be separated over 120 minutes, ending Australia’s impressive tournament run.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, whose well-placed header gave the African side an early advantage.

Australia fought back in the second half and equalised after an unfortunate own goal by Mohamed Hany, sending the contest into extra time after the score remained 1–1 at the end of regulation.

Despite several chances at both ends during the additional 30 minutes, neither team could find the winner, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Egypt converted all four of their penalties, while Australia’s Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington failed to score. Hossam Abdelmaguid calmly converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4–2 victory and send Egypt into the last 16.

The victory marks Egypt’s first-ever win in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, representing one of the country’s greatest achievements on football’s biggest stage.

Captain Mohamed Salah, who recently returned from injury, praised his teammates for their resilience and described the qualification as a historic moment for Egyptian football.

Australia, meanwhile, bowed out after another spirited World Cup campaign, with head coach Tony Popovic expressing pride in his players despite the painful defeat.

Following the victory, Egypt shifted its focus to the Round of 16, where the team is set to face defending champions Argentina, who advanced after edging Cape Verde in another dramatic knockout encounter.

Coach Hossam Hassan hailed his players’ determination, saying the result reflected the belief and discipline they had shown throughout the tournament.

Egypt’s historic triumph keeps Africa’s hopes alive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and sets up a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash against Lionel Messi’s Argentina. With confidence growing inside the Pharaohs’ camp, fans will hope the team can continue its remarkable run on football’s biggest stage.
