Morocco produced a clinical second-half display to defeat co-host Canada 3–0 in Houston, booking a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and becoming the first African nation to reach the last eight of the World Cup on more than one occasion.

Morocco continued their impressive FIFA World Cup campaign on Saturday with a commanding 3–0 victory over tournament co-hosts Canada, securing a place in the quarter-finals and extending their remarkable run in the competition.

Despite facing an energetic Canadian side in the opening half, the Atlas Lions showed composure and experience after the break to seal one of the most convincing victories of the Round of 16.

Canada started brightly, dominating possession and creating several early scoring opportunities, but failed to convert their chances.

Morocco eventually broke the deadlock through Azzedine Ounahi, whose well-worked finish gave the North Africans the lead.

Ounahi doubled Morocco’s advantage later in the second half with another composed finish, becoming the first African player to score two goals in a World Cup knockout match since 2002.

Substitute Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal in stoppage time to complete an emphatic victory and send Morocco safely into the last eight.

The victory marks another historic milestone for Moroccan football.

Having reached the semi-finals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco have now qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals for the second consecutive tournament, becoming the first African nation to achieve the feat.

Canada, meanwhile, bowed out after their most successful World Cup campaign, having recorded their first-ever victory and progressed beyond the group stage for the first time.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his players for remaining patient despite Canada’s bright start, saying the team showed maturity and resilience when it mattered most.

Canada manager Jesse Marsch acknowledged Morocco’s clinical finishing and congratulated the Atlas Lions while expressing pride in his players’ performances throughout the tournament.

Morocco will now face the winner of the France vs Paraguay Round of 16 fixture as they continue their quest for a historic FIFA World Cup title. With another disciplined and efficient performance, the Atlas Lions have further strengthened their reputation as one of the tournament’s standout teams.
