The traditional ruler says communities must take lawful steps to defend themselves amid persistent insecurity.

The Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, has urged residents of his emirate to legally acquire weapons to defend themselves against persistent attacks by bandits.

The traditional ruler made the call amid continuing security concerns affecting several communities in northern Nigeria.

His remarks reflect the growing pressure being placed on local populations confronting repeated attacks, especially in rural areas where insecurity has continued despite ongoing military operations.

By emphasising lawful acquisition of arms, the Emir framed the appeal within existing legal provisions rather than vigilantism, even as concerns continue to grow over the capacity of affected communities to protect lives and property.

The statement also underscores the widening conversation around self-defence, local security structures and the limits of conventional policing in areas heavily affected by banditry.

Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the Emir’s comments.
