The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, says Nigeria should focus on addressing its structural economic challenges rather than pursuing what he described as an unrealistic $1 trillion economy target.
The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has criticised the Federal Government’s target of growing Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy, describing the ambition as “hallucination” and urging the administration to concentrate on resolving the country’s underlying economic problems.
Speaking on the government’s economic direction, Sanusi questioned the practicality of the $1 trillion target, arguing that greater attention should be given to fiscal discipline, transparency and addressing long-standing structural issues affecting the economy.
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria also raised concerns over continued government borrowing following the removal of fuel subsidy, maintaining that sustainable economic growth requires consistent policies and prudent fiscal management rather than ambitious economic projections.
Sanusi’s remarks add another voice to the ongoing national conversation about Nigeria’s economic direction and the measures required to achieve long-term growth. His comments focus on the relationship between policy implementation, public finance and the country’s broader economic objectives.
According to Sanusi, the government should prioritise fixing fundamental economic challenges before pursuing large economic targets. He also stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in public spending as part of efforts to strengthen the economy. At the time of the report, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to his remarks.
Sanusi’s intervention has further highlighted discussions surrounding Nigeria’s economic reform agenda, with attention remaining on how the government intends to pursue its long-term growth objectives while addressing current fiscal and economic challenges.
