Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has directed the provision of alternative accommodation for residents whose homes were demolished during the ongoing expansion of the Afor Nnobi roundabout in Idemili South Local Government Area.
Soludo gave the directive during a meeting with the traditional ruler of Nnobi, Igwe Nick Obi, and other community stakeholders in Awka.
The governor directed the Commissioner for Works, Okey Ezeobi, to facilitate the construction of accommodation for three people whose residential buildings were affected by the project and ensure their subsequent relocation.
Soludo said the demolition and reconstruction work were intended to transform the existing roundabout into a five-lane junction and ease traffic congestion, particularly during periods of increased movement.
He assured affected residents that his administration would not abandon those who suffered losses as a result of the project.
The government also linked the intervention to wider plans for the redevelopment of the area, including the proposed construction of an ultra-modern Afor Nnobi Market.
The project has nevertheless generated concerns among some residents and community stakeholders over the demolition of homes, businesses and portions of the market.
An earlier opinion published by Nnobi indigene Obinna Chidi Ufudo criticised the demolition and called for affected property owners and traders to be properly addressed.
The latest directive from the governor represents an attempt to address at least some of the residential displacement arising from the road expansion.
The administration says the infrastructure project is intended to improve traffic flow and long-term connectivity, while affected residents and community voices have continued to raise questions about the consequences of the demolition.
For the three residents whose homes were specifically identified, the immediate issue is now the delivery of the promised replacement accommodation and relocation arrangements.
