Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said President Bola Tinubu should step aside ahead of the 2027 election, arguing that Nigeria needs a leader with the energy, competence and capacity to tackle its mounting economic and security challenges.
Peter Obi has declared that Nigeria requires a new generation of leadership, insisting that President Bola Tinubu no longer possesses the capacity needed to steer the country through its current difficulties.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics with Seun Okinbaloye, Obi said the country was moving in the wrong direction and called on the President to retire from active politics.
‘He Should Step Aside’
Obi argued that while President Tinubu may have made efforts in office, Nigeria now requires leadership with greater energy and competence.
According to him:
“The man should just step aside… He doesn’t have the capacity to do the job.”
He maintained that effective leadership demands competence, compassion, commitment, character and the physical and mental capacity to govern.
Calls for Leadership Change
The former Anambra State governor said the country’s worsening economic conditions and insecurity require urgent action from leaders capable of implementing reforms.
He stressed that his criticism was focused on governance and national development rather than personal attacks, insisting that Nigerians deserve leadership capable of delivering measurable progress.

Obi’s remarks form part of his broader campaign message ahead of the 2027 presidential election, where he has consistently argued for reforms aimed at improving governance, creating jobs and restoring public confidence in government institutions.
