The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is deploying artificial intelligence tools as part of measures to strengthen the verification of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, said AI would be used to assist with the examination of election-result records and identify discrepancies before final human verification.

The commission has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division under its Information and Communication Technology Department as part of its preparations for the 2027 polls.

The AI tools are expected to support the commission in detecting anomalies and inconsistencies in result records and monitoring relevant election data.

However, the technology is intended to support rather than replace human verification and decision-making.

Amupitan has also warned against misinformation, deepfakes and the declaration of unofficial election results, urging the media and other stakeholders to strengthen fact-checking ahead of the polls.

The deployment marks one of INEC’s latest efforts to use technology to strengthen the integrity, speed and transparency of the electoral process.
