Former Labour Party presidential candidate says strengthening health insurance and primary healthcare remains central to building a healthier Nigeria.

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says efforts toward building a healthier Nigeria must remain focused on expanding healthcare access and strengthening primary healthcare systems across the country.

Obi disclosed that he met with healthcare professionals and experts in the United States on Friday, June 5, 2026, as part of ongoing engagements aimed at understanding how effective healthcare systems deliver improved medical services, particularly in primary and emergency care.

According to him, the meeting was designed to deepen his understanding of how successful health insurance structures function and how similar systems could help improve healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The former Anambra State governor said one of the major objectives remains expanding health insurance coverage, strengthening primary healthcare facilities across electoral wards, training more healthcare workers, and ensuring that quality healthcare becomes both accessible and affordable for Nigerians.

Obi stated that the vision of a “New Nigeria” must include a stronger healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of ordinary citizens. His comments place renewed attention on the continuing debate around healthcare infrastructure, workforce shortages and access to medical services in the country.

The engagement with healthcare experts also reflects increasing conversations around policy-based approaches to public health reform as stakeholders continue to examine long-term solutions for Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
