The family of Mary Habila, the 26-year-old physiotherapist who died at the residence of Minister of Works David Umahi in Uburu, Ebonyi State, has announced her burial arrangements. The announcement comes as police investigations continue and public attention remains fixed on the expected autopsy into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Nearly three weeks after the mysterious death of physiotherapist Mary Habila sparked nationwide attention, her family has announced plans to lay her to rest.
The burial announcement marks a new phase in a case that has generated intense public debate, with investigators yet to release the findings of the police investigation or the expected autopsy that authorities say will help determine the exact cause of death.
According to the funeral programme released by the family, Habila will be buried on Friday, July 17, 2026.
Her funeral service is scheduled to hold at the Deeper Life Bible Church in Nok, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where relatives, friends, church members and colleagues are expected to gather to pay their final respects to the late physiotherapist.
Although funeral preparations have begun, the circumstances surrounding Habila’s death remain under active investigation.
The 26-year-old was found unresponsive at Minister David Umahi’s country residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, on June 27. Following the incident, the Nigeria Police transferred the case to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation, while the minister publicly requested that an autopsy be conducted to scientifically establish the cause of death.
The case has continued to attract widespread public attention, prompting renewed calls from civil society groups, legal practitioners and members of the public for a transparent investigation.
Several organisations have urged authorities to ensure that all forensic procedures are completed and that the findings of the investigation are made public to strengthen confidence in the justice process.
Beyond the announcement of the burial arrangements, the incident continues to generate significant public interest because many of the questions surrounding Habila’s death remain unanswered.
Investigators have not yet released the autopsy findings or concluded the police inquiry, meaning the official cause of death has not been publicly established. Until then, authorities have continued to urge restraint against speculation while the legal process runs its course.
As Mary Habila’s family prepares to bid her farewell, attention remains focused on the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The expected autopsy report is widely seen as a crucial piece of evidence that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding one of Nigeria’s most closely watched public interest cases in recent weeks.
