The dramatic operation in the Lake Chad Basin has sparked global attention as Donald Trump and President Tinubu hail a major anti-terror breakthrough.

A major counter-terrorism breakthrough has emerged after United States President Donald Trump announced that American and Nigerian forces successfully killed a top ISIS commander during a joint military operation in Nigeria.

Trump revealed that the target, identified as Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, was one of the most dangerous ISIS leaders globally and had allegedly been hiding within the Lake Chad Basin region. According to the US president, the operation was “meticulously planned” and executed through close collaboration between US operatives and the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The announcement immediately triggered massive reactions across international security circles, with many describing the strike as one of the biggest blows dealt to ISIS operations in Africa in recent years. Trump claimed the terrorist leader had been actively coordinating attacks and helping expand extremist activities across parts of West Africa before his elimination.

Security analysts say the development could significantly weaken Islamic State-linked operations around the Lake Chad region, where insurgent groups have continued to terrorise communities despite ongoing military offensives by regional governments. The Nigerian government has repeatedly intensified cooperation with foreign allies in tackling terrorism and cross-border insurgency.

President Bola Tinubu also praised the success of the operation, describing it as proof that Nigeria remains committed to crushing terrorist networks threatening national security. The operation reportedly led to the deaths of several other senior fighters linked to the extremist group.

The latest development comes amid renewed global concerns over the growing activities of terrorist factions across West Africa, with observers warning that extremist groups continue to exploit porous borders and weak local security structures in parts of the Sahel region.
