The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and publisher Omoyele Sowore bail in the sum of ₦200 million as he continues to face alleged cybercrime charges, subject to strict conditions imposed by the court.

Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday granted a ₦200 million bail to African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, who is standing trial over alleged cybercrime offences. The ruling came after arguments by both the prosecution and the defence on his bail application.

Justice Umar ordered Sowore to produce two sureties in like sum before the bail can take effect. One of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second must own landed property within Abuja.

The court also directed the defendant to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court pending the determination of the case. In addition, the prosecution was ordered to verify the sureties before his release.

The ruling follows Sowore’s arraignment on alleged cybercrime charges, which he has denied. His legal team has maintained that the charges are without merit, while the prosecution insists it has sufficient evidence to proceed with the trial.

The case has attracted significant public attention because of Sowore’s profile as a politician, publisher and activist.

Following the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned the matter until July 6, 2026, when Sowore is expected to open his defence.

The court released him to his lawyers pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, while reminding both parties to prepare for the continuation of trial on the adjourned date.

The bail ruling allows Sowore temporary freedom while his trial continues, but he must first satisfy all conditions laid down by the court. The substantive hearing is expected to resume next week as the Federal High Court proceeds with the case.
